Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance ...Garth Brooks

Ernest Dean has introduced me to so many different stories and to so many new friends. Part 6 of The Journey to Tassafaronga tells about just some of them. It is a celebration of his short life and cherished memory.

John 15 11-13
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Sad movies always make me cry

Saturday, May 26, 2012

I have literally spent hundreds of hours directing and editing the Journey to Tassafaronga, so much so that I can spell it correctly now without even thinking about it. In all the videos I have edited, I never have had a speaking part. This video was different.

The Western Union telegram from the the Navy Department had to be read. I knew that I would have to read it! I can not recall how many times it took to complete reading the telegram without me breaking up and crying like a baby. The Journey to Tassafaronga was now coming to the conclusion.

What were you thinking?

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

What must have Ernest Dean been thinking as he stood on the deck of the USS Northampton as the ship entered Pearl Harbor December 8, 1941. The Northampton should have been in port on December 7, 1941 but by shear happenstance they missed the day that will live in infamy.

The ship was scheduled to be in Pearl Harbor at ten o'clock on Dec. 6; however during training maneuvers the aft line snapped and trailed back and wound itself around the propeller. They were dead in the water. After 5 ½ hours to remove the hemp from the shaft and screw they were underway again only to have an electrical generator burn up. Again, dead in the water.

With those problems, the task force changed its date to arrive at Pearl Harbor to ten o'clock am on Dec. 7, 1942. The Northampton reduced speed and was within 100 to 200 miles from Pearl when they received word of the attack.

Three hundred seventy seven (377) days later the Northampton would not be so lucky!

Shellbacks & Pollywogs...the good times

"I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way,
where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over."
... Sea Fever by John Masefield

Rest In Peace  Ernest Dean

Words are the servants of vision, and vision is the essential ingredient in everything humans have ever created or accomplished, good or bad.”...Alan Wartes

We should never forget words are powefull tools! Choose your words carefully!

Therefore, we should never forget what the words Memorial day should mean: Memorial Day is not a holiday. Memorial Day is a time to remember a person or an event of someone who as died in active military service.

If words are indeed the servants of vision and are truly the essential ingredient of everything humans have created or accomplished then we should never forget our history. “It doesn't matter where your history goes, it goes somewhere. The excitement is uncovering that story,"... “once you put your ancestors within the framework of American history, genealogy can become more than just dates or places”.... David E. Rencher, chief genealogical officer for FamilySearch.org.

For me personally, The Journey to Tassafaronga is more than a journey to find out “ Who Do You Think You Are?” but to find out the meaning of the words Memorial Day.

Ships and Sailors- something fourth dimensional

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

Sail Easy, Armella, Carleen, Ray.

My namesake Ernest Dean Parsons is dead. He died on his nineteenth birthday. I never met him, nor have we had a personal conversation together. None the less we have talked vicariously via Sherman E. Walgren. Sixty–two years after Dean's death I met Sherman (Sail Easy) Walgren. Sail Easy never met Dean either, but they both served aboard the same ship USS Northampton (CA26). Only one came home.

"When the ship is hurt, the men are hurt.
When the men bleed,
the ships bleed- that's the way with a fighting ship.
The sailors are one.
There is a mysterious between ships and sailors-
something fourth dimensional.”.....anoymous

I received the following email yesterday from Sail Easy who is :
